Personal computers made many difficult tasks so easy for us, especially in these last years when their performance reached the top. However, it seems like today’s smartphones can do most of these tasks, and sometimes even better! .
So in this blog we are going to compare power, price, screen size and storage of computers and smartphones, in order to distinguish the main differences between them and to know why one is better than the other in some tasks.
Computers
Power and performance
computers offer high performance which requires a lot of power, this means that the consumption of electricity will be high, An average desktop computer uses between 60 and 300 watts. That is why high performance computers are plugged into walls or have bigger batteries, also they generate much heat when performing some heavy duty tasks like video editing, gaming and for compiling applications, this is why they requires large heat sinks and fans and even sometimes water cooling systems. However low performance computer don’t consume much of power.
Cost
Prices of computers and laptops can vary depending on many aspects like ; the brand name ,the operating system , performance and storage . Usually Prices for laptops range from $300 for the low-end models to $3000 for high-speed models with large and storage capacity. So it end ends to the needs of the user, whether its for heavy tasks or for daily usage like internet browsing.
Screen size
Desktop computers are made to be connected to a wide variety of monitors depending on size and quality of that screen. The Resolution usually ranges from 1600×900 to 2560×1600.however, With 4k you can reach 3840×2160. They cost between 50$ and 600$.
When it comes to Laptops, screen’s size is usually between 13 inches and 17 inches. And usually they don’t a very high quality .
Storage
Today’s computers usually come with hard drive capacity that is around 1 Terabyte TB, and even if the user wants more than that, then he can add an external drive that can reach to 16TB, which is a huge capacity for data storage.
Smartphones
Power and performance
Smartphones and tablets run on batteries which means that they have to use power efficiently, so very powerful processors cannot be provided to such small batteries, this limits the performance of these devises a lot which is not good when it comes to tasks such as; programming GUI(graphical user interface) applications and games , Designing and Video editing. However, the advantage to smaller batteries is that the device will be portable which makes it very handy in many occasions.
Price
Prices for midrange devices are between 100$-300$, but for flagships the price can reach 1000$ or more (which the same price as a high-end computer), like the iphoneX and the galaxy s10.
Screen size
Smartphones screen size differ a lot from a manufacturer to the other, but they are between 4.5 to 6 inches and can reach to 10.0 inches for fablets (between a tablet and a phone).
Also mobile devices can be rotated to show websites in both landscape and portrait orientations , but desktop and laptop displays are in landscape orientation .
Storage
Most smartphones and tablets have storage of 8GB to 64GB, and the flagship ones reach up to 128 GB, also an SD card of 16GB to 254GB could be added to extend the storage if supported.
Common grounds between PCs and Mobile phones
Both computers and smartphones can be used to :
- browse internet
- create documents
- check emails and different accounts
- read e-books
- chats, and social media
- watch videos and pictures
which one to choose?
Since both devices have a lot of advantages in some parts and some disadvantages in others, many users choose to have both . however, when it comes to choosing only one device, it really ends to the user him-self . So if the user needs it for task which require a lot of power and performance then a computer is the best choice, but if it is just for daily tasks like surfing the net and creating documents, then a smartphone will do just good .
